An unidentified New Jersey nurse is currently under fire after allegedly reusing syringes while administering flu vaccines to patients at a West Windsor pharmaceutical company. The nurse, whose identity remains undisclosed, voluntarily surrendered her license and is temporarily suspended pending a final determination by the New Jersey Board of Nursing.
According to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, the nurse administered flu shots to 67 patients at Otsuka Pharmaceutical in West Windsor on Wednesday, September 30th. A consent order from the State Board of Nursing alleged that the nurse administered an inadequate amount of the flu vaccine, utilizing two single-use syringes She is also accused of reusing the syringes that contain the vaccine, but not the actual needles.
Although health officials have assessed a low risk of infection, they recommended testing for Hepatitis B and C, as well as HIV, for those who received the vaccine during this incident. The company that enlisted the nurse as an independent contractor, TotalWellness, apologized and indicated that they are in full cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Health to inform those affected.
As for the nurse, it remains to be seen whether she will be charged with a criminal offense or face the full revocation of her license to practice. However, the New Jersey Board of Nursing stated that if the accusations are in fact true, the nurse’s actions constitute gross negligence, malpractice or incompetence.
What then for those whose health was placed in jeopardy? They may have grounds for a medical malpractice lawsuit.
