A Monmouth Beach man was recently hospitalized with traumatic injuries after a tire that he was filling with air exploded, causing the metal rim to strike him in the head.
According to Thomas C. Walsh, Chief of the Monmouth Beach Police Department, a 56-year-old man was inflating a tire using an air compressor on Borden Street in Monmouth Beach at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 10th prior to the incident. The man, who remains unidentified, was discovered with a severe head injury after officials responded to a report of an explosion.
Upon arriving at the scene, the man, a Monmouth Beach resident, was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he underwent surgery. He was subsequently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and remained in critical condition as of recent reports.
During the initial investigation of the incident, officials deduced that during the course of inflating the tire with a compressor, the tire exploded and then shattered the metal rim, a fragment of which struck the man in the head. The question remains, however, what caused the tire explosion in the first place?
Sadly, defective tires are marketed to unsuspecting consumers with astounding frequency, leading to blow-outs, tire tread separations, and other incidents that can result in tragic consequences. If a tire is designed or manufactured improperly, drivers may be left vulnerable to life-threatening situations every time they take to the road, or as is evidenced by this case, while not even driving.
In order to determine if an underlying defect contributed to the injuries of you or someone you love, an extensive investigation is often required, reconstructing the circumstances that preceded the accident or event, conducting forensic analysis of the tire and vehicle dynamics, and consulting with experts in the field. If the evidence supports a negligence claim against the tire manufacturer or other third-party, you can seek compensation for your injuries with a product liability claim or pursue a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of your lost loved one.
