There are many products that may be deemed dangerous, but products claiming to be “all natural” should be the least of a consumer’s worries. Recently, however, two products sold as being “natural” dietary supplements have come under the scrutiny of the Food and Drug Administration and have been declared a dangerous product due to certain ingredients found in them.
According to reports, the ingredients may cause serious or even fatal side effects. New Jersey consumers should beware and look carefully at labels.
The products are known as Reumofan Plus and Reumofan Plus Premium. While they are marketed as being natural supplements, the FDA reported that its tests revealed that there are dangerous prescription drug ingredients in the supplements. Because of these ingredients, the FDA has encouraged consumers to avoid purchasing the supplements, and to stop taking them if they have been. Those who have been taking the products are also urged to check with their doctor.
The dangerous ingredients found in the supplements include dexamethasone, which is a corticosteroid known to increase infection risk and affect blood pressure, blood sugar and damage bones.
The non-steroidal drug diclofenac sodium was also found. It is used as an anti-inflammatory drug but has very serious potential side effects including fatal digestive perforations.
A muscle relaxer known as methocarbamol, which can cause physical and mental impairment, was also discovered in the supplements.
The FDA reports it has received dozens of reports of illness, stroke or death associated with these supplements. The first warning was released in June, and there has been an influx of reports since then. The FDA warns that these ingredients may also interact with other drugs that consumers may be taking, which can also lead to adverse side effects.
New Jersey consumers who believe they have taken a dangerous product such as these supplements should immediately stop using them. In addition, seeking information on the product and any possible legal recourse options that are available for detrimental effects that may have been suffered may benefit consumers.
